JAPAN
Tips & Recommendations

Japanese might be interested in your cultural values, beliefs and norms, but they don’t want them in their own country!
Japanese are highly protective of their culture. So study our guide and try to adapt to the Japanese culture during your stay as much as you can. You’ll probably never be accepted as a real Japanese, but you can at least avoid hostility.
1

You have to look for mistakes in your behavior yourself!
Be aware that Japanese won’t always say, what they really think, because it’s considered to be impolite and because they’ve learned to tolerate a lot. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have to change your behavior, but instead that you have to look for mistakes in your behavior yourself. Try to think of omoiyari and fulfill their expectations before they ask for or even think about it.
2

Don’t rely on your manners!
Be aware that, although you may consider yourself as polite, Japanese take courtesy to another level. Read our about the Japanese norms in our guide to be prepared for that.
3

Compete, but in groups!
Although Japan is a collectivist society where group needs and wants are placed above those of the individual, Japanese highly value competition, achievement and success. So in Japan these values are related to the behavior of groups instead of individuals.
4

Never give a tip in Japan – cabs, restaurants, personal care. To tip someone is actually a little insulting, since the services you’ve asked for are already covered by the price given.
5

Bowing is nothing less than an art form in Japan, respect pounded into children’s heads from the moment they enter school. For tourists, it’ll be enough to take a second looking at the other person’s shoes. When greeting a friend, Japanese people usually smile and do a quick head nod.
6

Take off your shoes at the entrance to all homes, and most businesses and hotels. In restaurants and hotels there are extra slippers you can use or you just go barefoot or in socks.
